24–18 Months Before Separation
  • Schedule Initial Counseling (IC): start DD Form 2648 & Individual Transition Plan (ITP); confirm Tier & Career Readiness Standards (CRS).
  • Explore pathways: SkillBridge (apply up to 12 months), MilGears (JST → credentials), ACP mentorship.
  • Talk reserve options: SELRES/IRR affiliation (see MyNavyHR reserve benefits).
18–12 Months Before Separation (TAP Core)
  • Pre-Separation Counseling (mandatory, NLT 365 days): benefits, timelines, ITP setup.
  • DoD Transition Day: Managing Your Transition • MOC Crosswalk • Financial Planning.
  • Pick 2-Day Track(s): DOL Employment (DOLEW), Career & Credential Exploration (C2E), Managing Your Education (MYE), SBA Boots to Business.
12 Months Out → 90 Days (Claims, Health, Capstone)
  • VA BDD Claim: submit between 180–90 days (start gathering medical records now).
  • GI Bill: confirm transfer status/obligation; review education plans (FAFSA, admissions).
  • Health: schedule SHPE/SHA & Mental Health Assessment; plan TRICARE Reserve Select or Marketplace coverage.
  • Capstone (NLT 90 days): verify CRS (resume, budget, ITP, job/education plan); request warm handover if needed.
  • DD-214: review for accuracy before separation—this document unlocks benefits.
